PRINCIPLES AND VALUES
Our organising team have agreed to work by the following principles and values. They inform our decisions and guide our work towards our vision.
-
We believe the current energy system drives human suffering and ecological destruction by valuing profit above all else.
We are committed to transitioning our energy system from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources, and to reducing overall energy consumption in our economy to ecologically sustainable and socially just levels.
We actively seek to reduce the harm done through supply chains of technologies like solar panels and batteries. This means not just looking to purchase panels from certified ethical suppliers but also, where possible, forming personal connections with those working in supply chains.
We embed education on the political and economic systems that control our energy system and the types of harm they currently do into our work.
-
We value people over profit, and choose to build an energy system based on human flourishing and real democracy.
We seek to build energy commons, in which people take power over and responsibility for their electricity generation and consumption, with an accompanying shift away from both big business and centralised state (‘public’) control.
We aim to build new democratic organisations that put power in the collective hands of all those affected by their actions, including through international connections. To do this, we must build local community power and responsibility in the areas where we work.
-
We will strive to become independent of grant funding to maintain community-owned energy in Hull. This doesn’t mean that we will not use grant funding, but that we will use grant funding in order to become financially independent.
Assets fully owned by Power Hull will be asset locked so they can only be used for community benefit, not private gain or profit. Collaborative projects must include significant community benefit beyond increased income for a generator owner.
We seek to ensure any surplus income generated contributes to community benefit by spending it democratically. For example, this may go towards alleviating local fuel poverty or helping to fund community assets.
-
We prioritise action. We aim to make the best interventions through careful planning and research, but do not let perfect be the enemy of good.
We will use the knowledge and experience gained from this project to help other groups with similar values.
We recognise the need to both build alternative organisations and fight oppression using direct action. We embed collective direct action into our work and seek to act in solidarity with others using direct action to resist oppression and exploitation.
We also follow Cooperation Hull’s Principles and Values.
